Abstract. We consider M-ary signaling in page-oriented holographicnstorage systems that multiplex pages using three methods: conventionalnangular multiplexing throughout the volume, localized recording, and ancombination of angular multiplexing within localized recording. We studynthe mutual information transfer, which is increasingly easy to achieve innpractice, between the recorded and recovered data, and use it to assessnthe storage density in these systems. We use the existing holographicnchannel model for the dominant Rician noise case for deriving the mutualninformation bound on the capacity and examine the interplay betweennthe storage density and the number of recorded pages within the me-ndium. We quantify through information-theoretical analysis that it is pos-nsible to obtain considerably higher storage capacities using gated local-nized holography than what can be achieved in conventional volumenholography with angular multiplexing by appropriately optimizing thennumber of intensity levels for a given material constant and signal-to-nnoise ratio. © 2010 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.nu0001DOI: 10.1117/1.3294886
