A method for clustering surgical cases to allow master surgical scheduling

The operating rooms of a hospital generate maximum revenue to the hospital. Hence the efficiency of managing and scheduling them is very important for the hospital. One approach for this is to build a master surgical schedule which give the surgical schedules of all types of surgeries clustered based on their common characteristics. The master surgical schedule optimizes based on the resource demand profits. Newly arrived patients are assigned to the master surgical schedule on a weekly basis. Based on the historical data on the surgery, surgery types are allocated time on master surgical schedule. To fill the vacuum on the surgery time, dummy surgeries re used. It is preferable to have low volume of dummy surgeries and low variability in resource demand usage. This study proposes a method for obtaining the requirements. (18 refs.)
