Research on gender segregation, or the tendency for women to work in systematically different occupations and industries than men, have been focusing on demand-side influences i.e., effects of employers' decisions. This research work tries to examine gender segregation from the supply-side influences which comes from examining men's and women's application decisions. The paper offers integrative framework of the factors that might lead to gender differences in job applications. It was found that decisions about which jobs to apply to are generally shaped by three distinct factors: preferences for specific rewards, such as money or flexibility; identification with certain jobs, and expectations that an application will succeed. Further the constraints of gender role socialization to the three factors have been discussed from the perspectives of men and women. (80 refs.)
