Domestic pricing of petroleum products in OPEC Member Countries — an overview

Over the past two decades, much attention has been focused upon the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. The fact that OPEC countries provide about 40 per cent of world oil production and possess 75 per cent of world oil reserves has guided most research towards issues related to OPEC's decisions on production and their impact on world oil markets. As a result, many studies have focused on such topics as the quota system, capacity utilisation, OPEC's response to world oil market conditions, etc. Given the existing tendency for world oil demand to increase, as well as the limited expansion capability of non-OPEC production, it can be safely argued that research will continue to focus on OPEC and the impact of OPEC's decision-making process on world oil markets.
