摘要

My friend Tracy Johnston is writing a book about polygamy. Several months ago, her research took her to a city called Kano in northern Nigeria during a period of national political unrest. The people of Kano live in mud houses and subsist primarily on agriculture and indigo. There are very few private telephones, but there are fax machines. Like most of the phones, the fax machines are owned and maintained by businesses but are freely used as a semi-public convenience.
