Databases are at the heart of full-service libraries. While much of the "sizzle" resides in databases used as electronic reference tools, the heart of the matter for most institutions remains the local catalog database and, to a lesser degree, union catalogs representing the holdings of multiple libraries. Not withstanding interesting demonstrations and specialized needs, it will not be for many years, if ever, that the notion of maintaining physical collections to meet the most frequent needs of the greatest possible number of local users becomes obsolete.
