DVD-Taking the Compact Disc to New Heights in Power and Function

Paul Saffo, consultant and futurist, has described television/entertainment products in the home as something one leans back to use, while computers are used while leaning forward. The distinction Saffo makes isn't as trivial as you may think. For over ten years, the computer industry has actively promoted the idea of a convergence between home computers and home entertainment areas—what we now know of as our television sets, stereo systems, and other home electronics gear. However, as Saffo has noted, these areas remain distinctly separate and, perhaps more significantly, differences remain in terms of our approach to them. Throughout America, if not the world, the La-Z-Boy remains parked near the television set, while a more ergonomically-correct chair awaits the computer user. In light of this, it may seem difficult to imagine the vast differences possible for both information and recreational interaction in the future. Television is going digital and computers are increasingly finding their way into games, video, and other noncomputing applications. Believe it or not, the future is approaching quickly.
