There is a wonderful scene in the movie Yentl, where the young protagonist asks her father to teach her the Torah and the Talmud, a thing unheard of in early 1900s Russia. After much soul-searching, the father reluctantly agrees, then goes to the window and draws the curtains. When she asks why, he replies, "God I trust; the neighbors I'm not so sure about..." Alas, the world is not a safe place. You can't trust everyone. And, like it or not, your computer can be a target for the unscrupulous and unprincipled. With all the other work we have to do, we frequently resent having to worry about computer security. At the same time, it is not realistic to expect better behavior in the electronic world than in other areas of life.
