Finance Portals and Their Impact on Information Professionals

That the Internet has democratized information is not in doubt. It's the enormous promise that the Web brings to ordinary people—no barriers between them and information. Information professionals sometimes react to this promise with skepticism. We realize that it's not all the information, that some Web information has dubious origins, and that what might be appropriate for one audience is not similarly appropriate for another. Still, information professionals recognize how greatly the democratization of information has benefited libraries, allowing them to offer end users premium content databases through EBSCOhost, ProQuest, CSA, and Factiva without the intense instruction previously required, as well as to recommend quality Web sites and put their own digital information on the Web.
