Apps have been around for longer than you probably think. I first considered app development in 2010 after the release of the original iPad. A group of students and I installed the Apple SDK kit on one of our library Macs and started experimenting. My thinking then (and now) was to try and shift some of our budget from ongoing annual expenses to standalone products that incurred a one-time capital expense with significantly cheaper annual costs. Also, it seemed to be a reasonable consideration given the challenges facing libraries.
