The meeting was opened by Barbara Roche MP, then Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Trade and Industry. Launching a new booklet from the DTI, Working anywhere: exploring telework for individuals and organisations, she said, 'In today's marketplace UK businesses must compete on the basis of the knowledge of their employees. Teleworking allows firms to harness the power of modern technology to apply this knowledge more effectively than ever before. Teleworking is not an end in itself, but a way of delivering tradeable skills over a distance. Companies must begin to think in terms of information flow and working by results, rather than judging work done by the simple presence of someone in the workplace.'
