Another year has gone by. But 1997 has not been like other years. In the last few months particularly, events have drawn a progressively clearer picture in the olive sector and it will very probably be this picture that will mark the approaching turn of the century. Never before has olive farming known a time of such intense bustle, with both its positive and more problematic aspects. On the one hand the major consumer markets are expanding and buying better-quality product, especially outside the Mediterranean region. On the other, there is the question of the future lying ahead in the European Union, the world's leading producer, consumer and exporter.
