Agrichemicals and Environmental Impact in Olive Farming

Like other agricultural crops olive farming raises various environmental problems, including the important issue of the use of agrichemicals. The environmental impact of these synthetic substances is viewed here from the standpoint of the health risks, the impact on the biocoenosis and the effect of the toxic residues that may affect the plant, soil, water, fruit and oil produced. However, an environmentally compatible approach to crop protection comprises several control techniques -agronomic, biological and technological- alternative to pesticides. This is the direction being taken in research programmes and in the crop health schemes implemented over large olive growing areas.
