Nigel Parkinson has been at Caterpillar for more than a decade and spent nearly 15 years before that working for Perkins Engines. What that means is that Mr Parkinson has been in the post long enough to manage the business through the 2008 global financial crisis, the acquisition of Berg Propulsion in 2013 and the lower oil prices afflicting the offshore support vessel market from the end of 2014. Now he's managing it through another difficult period for the industry it serves. With the group active in 10 markets, all at different points in their cycles, he emphasises that group investments are for the long-term benefit of all segments. At a time when Cat Marine's cruise business is buoyant and its tugboat, fishing, pleasure craft and government markets are "holding up relatively well", offshore remains a priority.
