In mid-2000, in an attempt to foster the advancement of Scottish companies abroad, Scottish Development International (SDI), a division of Scottish Enterprise, established an 'incubator' program in its Houston office to help firms transfer knowledge from their North Sea roots into the Gulf of Mexico market. Now, four years later, this program continues to grow and bear fruit. The concept behind the incubator, says Lorna Jack, director, Americas for SDI, was to find a very practical mechanism to help Scottish companies with exciting technologies to enter the US marketplace. This mechanism essentially provides companies with a small office and the necessary infrastructure, phone lines, Internet connections, etc, in order to begin operations in the new country.
