Standards and Certification: Responsible Management Drivers and Sustainability Enablers

Serious and legitimate concerns have been established about the state of the world's marine resources over the last 25 years. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations routinely reports that wild fish stocks are producing at or close to their maximum sustainable limits with no significant potential for catch increases. And within the last 25 years, global aquaculture production has rocketed from a fraction of world seafood supply to its current (and increasing) percentage of world seafood supply of approximately 50%. It was perhaps inevitable that these two broad dichotomous trends - combined with the fact that fisheries and aquaculture are vital for global food security - contributed to increased public scrutiny of ocean harvest activities.
