On Sunday December 26, 2004 at 00:58:53 UTC, an undersea megathrust earthquake with an epicentre located off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, triggered one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history: the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
