Making The DEFCON 17 Badge

Every summer, thousands of hackers and computer security enthusiasts descend into Las Vegas for DEFCON - the largest and oldest continuously running event of its kind. It's a mix of good guys, bad guys, government officials, and everyone in between - all focused on having fun, sharing technical information, seeing old friends, and learning new things. For the fourth year in a row, I've had the honor of designing the conference badge for DEFCON. My goal for the badge is to have an active embedded system that is not only nice to look at, but provides unique and interesting functionality for the attendees. This article covers the engineering behind the DEFCON 1 7 badge and the problems I encountered along the way.
