The future of nuclear power in Sweden is “the biggest question” for the country’s long-term energy policy, Vattenfall’s new chief executive officer Magnus Hall said in a speech at an energy conference December 5. About a third of Sweden’s 10 reactors will reach the end of their 50- to 60-year technical lifetimes between 2024 and 2044 and will have to be permanently shut. “So, we have to have some kind of plan,” Hall said. The conference was organized by the Swedish daily business newspaper Dagens Industri. The Social Democratic-Green government, which took power from a conservative-center coalition government in October, has said it wants to phase out nuclear power and switch to 100% renewable energy.
