NRC and the nuclear industry have not resolved obstacles to the adoption of digital instrumentation and control systems in nuclear power plants, a failed opportunity that threatens the ability of the US nuclear fleet to extend operating lives of reactors to 80 years, industry representatives told agency commissioners last month.
