Swedish waste fund review finds uncertainty on repository financing

There is "considerable uncertainty" over whether there will be sufficient money available for a Swedish final spent fuel repository, the National Accounting Office, also known as NAO, said in a report to the government December 7, adding that there is a risk that Swedish taxpayers could be forced to pay part of the cost. By law, Swedish nuclear utilities are responsible for paying all costs associated with the management of nuclear waste and spent fuel, including those for a final repository. That work is financed through fees the nuclear utilities pay into the Swedish nuclear waste fund. The fees are set by the Swedish government and are based on the amount of electricity the utilities generate.
