Japan regulator says nuclear units to shut if they fail to meet deadline

Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority saidApril 24 it will order three power companies toshut their nuclear reactors if they missdeadlines starting in 2020 for completingbackup safety facilities to mitigate potentialaccident or attack.The five commissioners at NRAunanimously agreed that the plants would haveto shut if, as operators have said, they cannotmeet the coming deadlines to install facilities toprotect against an intentional or accidentalplane crash, among other scenarios.Operators of 12 Japanese reactors, nine ofwhich are operating, had said last week theywould miss the deadlines, some of whichcome next year, by between a year and twoand a half years. The bulk of Japan’s nineoperating reactors would miss the deadline byabout a year, their owners told the NRA duringa meeting April 17.
