Following the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and tsunami off the eastern Japanese coast that caused a nuclear reactor to explode, politicians of all stripes and regions - in American and abroad — seized on the disaster to support their views on whether a central repository for U.S. nuclear waste is a good idea, or a bad one. Eleven of Japan's 55 reactors were reportedly shut down after that nation's devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunami. Officials evacuated those living within six miles of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant when it lost backup power and hence, the ability to properly cool radioactive materials.
