This special issue of Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B of Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research was prepared to present recent achievements in synchrotron radiation science and mark the 25th anniversary of the Polish Synchrotron Radiation Society (PSRS) which fell in 2016. It presents selected papers submitted after the 13th International School and Symposium on Synchrotron Radiation in Natural Science (ISSRNS 2016) which was organized by PSRS in cooperation with the Adam Mickiewicz University. It is worth noting that PSRS is probably one of the earliest founded scientific societies focused on promoting the use of synchrotron radiation research (for details visit the PSRS home page: http://www.synchrotron.org.pl/). Since 2002 the Society has been regularly publishing its own journal-bulletin dedicated to synchrotron research - Synchrotron Radiation in Natural Science, and so far 17 volumes have been published. The first idea of constructing a synchrotron in Poland was proposed by the members of PSRS, and now the Society strongly supports the construction of this facility - National Centre of Synchrotron Radiation "Solaris" (http://www.synchrotron.uj.edu.pl/), which is located in Krakow (Poland) and it was put into operation in September 2015. Members of our Society are also involved in designing and construction of beamlines for "Solaris". Recent photos of synchrotron experimental hall and beamlines are presented in Fig. 1. A review of the current status of Polish synchrotron is presented in this issue by Wawrzyniak et al. [1].
