Editorial

This Virtual Special Issue contains papers based on work presented at the 28th international conference on atomic collisions in solids and the 10th international symposium on swift heavy ions in matter. Both were jointly organized and held in Caen (France) from 1 to 6 July 2018. After Kyoto (Japan) in 2012, this was the second time both conferences took place jointly. Following the decisions of the International scientific committees of both conferences, from now on ICACS«SHIM will be co-organized very two (even) years. The next edition is scheduled from 21 to 26 June 2020 in Helsinki (Finland) chaired by Flyura Djurabekova and Kai Nordlund. ICACS-28 dealt with physical and chemical phenomena induced by the interaction of beams with condensed matter (surface, bulk of solids and liquids). It started in 1965 in Aarhus (Denmark). The most recent meetings were held in Lanzhou (China, 2016) and Debrecen (Hungary, 2014). SHIM 2018 was the 10th International Symposium in a series started in Caen (France) in 1989. The last meeting has been held in Darmstadt (Germany, 2015). SHIM focuses on swift heavy ions and strong electronic excitations.
