Energy resolution of nuclear radiation detectors still have not reached their limit imposed by the statistical nature of the carrier creation and are greatly influenced by the combined detector and electronic noise especially at low energies. The noise can be minimized using a given filter network which is often characterized by relating it to the theoretical optimum but physically nonrealizable cusp filter (cusp factor, CF). A number of time variant as well as time invariant filters have been developed which have CF values quite close to this limit but they are either too complicated or their use is limited to special preamplifier configuration.
