Bilibino: Russia's baby

The four units at Russia's northernmost nuclear power station, Bilibino in Siberia, have a combined output of just 48 MWe. They are also an unusual design, EPG-6 graphite-moderated boiling water reactors. The reactors, which began operation between 1974 and 1976, have played an important role in developing the economy in the vast area on the Chukotka peninsula. According to operator Rosenergoatom, the site produces about 80% of the electricity generated in the region, principally for mining.
