My meeting with WNA director-general Agneta Rising (see interview, pp. 12-14) was fascinating. A radiation protection expert, she points out that the public's fear of radiation has proved to be more dangerous than the stuff itself-in terms of the psychological trauma it inflicts on evacuees, and even on those affected. In a part of the interview that didn't make it into print, she compares the physical effect of receiving a heavy dose of radiation as akin to a bad sunburn; both could lead to increased risks of cancer down the line.
