Career profile: Agneta Rising

I started my career atVattenfall, the Swedish electricity utility, in radiation protection. At that time in Sweden, new regulations were coming in to replace the ones from the 1970s. One of my first responsibilities was to analyse and prepare so that new and existing reactors would meet the incoming regulations; in principle it was a factor of 10 reduction on emission levels. It was challenging and interesting work as we also implemented the concepts of critical groups and collective dose. The new regulations considered, for the first time, long-lived isotopes; part of this was to make calculations for 500 years ahead; that also meant to look at releases of radioactivity to both water and air to see how they later mixed in the ecosystem, to calculate a total dose.
