There are now 20 commercial reactors in operation in China-Ningde 2 being the latest having started operation in January 2014-and 28 reactors under construction on various sites, including Qinshan, Sanmen, Haiyang, Yangjiang, Hongyanhe, Fuqing, Ningde, Fangjiashan and Taishan. A remarkable feature is that work is commencing on third and fourth units at several sites, immediately after the initial two units, with sites anticipated eventually to take six or more reactors. The largely indigenous CPR-1000 reactor is the mainstay of the programme, at least for now, but construction is underway of four Westinghouse AP1000S and two AREVA EPRs.
