While Part 1 of this issue concerned in-vessel scenarios, aiming at particle bed formation and coolability, the breakup of melt jets with resulting particulate debris formation and the coolability of such debris was treated in Parts 2 and 3 in a mostly generic manner. Basic questions of breakup and quenching to yield coolable particle beds as well as basic questions on coolable configurations were addressed. The latter concerned especially the importance of multidimensional configurations for coolability against 1D top flooding as well as co-current modes of water and steam flow against counter-current modes, but also other steps towards realistic conditions, with particle size distributions and non-spherical debris. In addition to boiling conditions, quenching was considered. These generic investigations and the respective modelling are not only relevant for in-vessel situations, but also for ex-vessel configurations with particulate as well as porous debris.
