Smelt Sampling Probe for Use in the Kraft Recovery Boiler

A probe was constructed capable of obtaining representative smelt samples from discrete locations deep in an operating recovery boiler. With no exposure to air, smelt samples were taken from the interior of smelt/char beds in two operating recovery boilers. Chemical analyses of the samples obtained showed that smelt reduction efficiency changed with the sampling location. The results also indicated there is potential to increase reduction efficiency and boiler capacity through modified design and improved operating procedures. Benefits are seen in increased energy efficiency, higher furnace capacity, and reduced deadload in the liquor cycle.
