摘要

In this essay I summarize and discuss some of the descriptions and arguments in Gregory Barz's book Singing for Life, which communicates findings from an ethnographic study of music and multiple healing systems in relation to HIV/AIDS in Uganda. My intention is not to write a book review evaluating the quality of the book, but to see Barz's contribution in the context of the broader field of music and health, where ethnomusicology and music therapy are two of the involved disciplines. I discuss how Singing for Life actualizes themes such as collaboration and activism but also isolationism and imperialism, both in relation to practice and scholarly activity.
