摘要

John huang was nowhere to be seen. As Sen. Fred Thompson began his campaign-finance hearings in Washington, the man at the center of the scandal was 3,000 miles away, holed up in his Glendale, Calif., home. Once one of the Democratic Party's top fund raisers and networkers, Huang now rarely ventures out, fearful of being ambushed by cameras and questions. Shunned by his old friends—including Bill Clinton and his former employers, Indonesian billionaires James and Mochtar Riady—he is now nearly destitute, racking up legal bills he can't pay. Huang, his lawyer Ty Cobb told NEWSWEEK, is "very depressed."
