A Good Investment

I had worked in construction for more than 22 years. As a site manager, I was used to being out in the open, organizing workers and materials and getting things done. I loved my work, was good at it and didn't really know any other occupation. But in 1992, in one instant, my whole life changed. I was standing on the 135th Street Bridge in Manhattan, enjoying the view of the Harlem River, when I was shot in the spine in broad daylight by a young man on a bicycle. The police called it an attempted robbery. If two people passing by hadn't rescued me, I would have died. The bullet left me paralyzed. I am now paraplegic and use a wheelchair.
