Elaine lutringer could never quite pinpoint what was wrong with the four Jackson boys next door. The blinds of the worn Collingswood, N.J., house were always down, and in six years she'd never seen them playing. In the summer Lutringer watched the Jackson girls splash around in the portable pool while the boys looked on. "I remember saying to myself that they weren't happy little boys," she says. Three years ago, Lutringer took a bounty of candies and cookies over to share with them. But when one of the boys came to the door, he closed it in her face.
