But last week, a car bomb blasted Beirut back to the days when it was a grim proxy battleground for the Middle East's most violent conflicts. Many Lebanese suspected the explosion, which killed eight, to be spillover from the war in Syria: one of the victims had investigated the assassination of former prime minister Rafik Hariri in 2005, and implicated Syria and its ally Hizbullah in the political attack.
