With one of the most diverse student bodies in Britain, Brunei University has taken an innovative approach to the introduction of creative writing to first-year students. Although ability spread in the freshman year is typically wide, language skills and awareness are, on the whole, not very developed, whether the students have been educated in UK or elsewhere. Instead of starting solely with modules on the main forms (prose fiction, poetry and drama,) the university has developed an introductory module that investigates the English language itself. This course prepares students for more advanced practise by exploring the language from a stylistic perspective, discovering the derivation and development of words, promoting linguistic awareness and considering the technical requirements of good writing. Its syllabus and teaching methods are described and set books and realia detailed.
