On Assessing Creative Writing

The author reflects on the standards and mechanics of judging creative writing, at university, in schools and in the literary world, and finds a continuity of heritage and a consensus of opinion, which gives the lie to the belief that creative assessment is only a question of value judgment. Even the bureaucratic imperatives by which assessment methodology is constructed can confer unexpected benefits.
