Communications Research Laboratory and Prof. Kenichi Kitayama of Osaka University have jointly succeeded in conducting a multiplexed transmission experiment on an Optical Code Division Multiplexing (OCDM) transmission technology with a capacity exceeding the terabit level for the first time. The OCDM transmission technology is a second generation optical network technology in contrast to the Optical Time Division Multiplexing Transmission Technology or the Wavelength Division Multiplexing System and permits multiplexed transmission of a given wavelength at the same instant through multiple channels. Communications Research Laboratory and Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications have jointly announced their target of establishing the basic technologies relating to a network system with a transmission speed of petabit class by the year 2005, and are presently striving to commercialize a related transmission system with an extra- large capacity.
