Shimadzu Corp. has developed a microchip electrophoresis system MCE-2010. The microchips used by the system are about one-half the size of a namecard cut vertically, and are produced by engraving grooves with a width of 110μm and depth of 50μm on the surface of a quartz wafer. Since a hard and stabilized quartz glass substrate is used, these microchips are usable repeatedly for 10,000 times. In genetic research, a basic procedure is to implant and proliferate some specific type of gene on a microchip, then confirming whether or not the number of implanted genes have increased as preestimated.
