It is generally understood that ignition and consequent burning are inevitable in the atmospheric melting of magnesium alloys. This problemsome property of magnesium alloys requires the use of special production techniques in foundries and is a major factor in increasing the manufacturing cost of castings. We found that the addition of metallic Ca to magnesium alloys significantly elevated the ignition temperature of the molten alloys in air. The addition of only 1wt% Ca to magnesium facilitates the melting and casting of magnesium alloy in air without flux and cover gas. It might be expected that Ca will simplify the manufacturing process and greatly contribute to the mass production of magnesium alloy castings. The most serious problem in the foundry of the magnesium alloy is that the production cost is high. There are two mainly reasons.
