摘要

This section describes various basic research and development activities in Japan to inform the world about generic R&D efforts here. Maintenance free coatings or surfaces have been strongly demanded in a wide variety of industrial fields. Among various kinds of surface treatment technologies establishing such surfaces, ultra water-repellent treatment or preparation of ultra water-repellent film is the most promising technology. Currently, plastics (or resin) are widely employed in automobile industries due to their excellent properties such as light weight, good impact resistance, easy coloring and shaping. If ultra water-repellency is endowed to the plastics, such materials are extremely useful for automobile encasements. Although the preparation of water-repellent and ultra water-repellent films have been extensively studied, these conventional methods cannot be applied to such low-heat resistant materials, since these methods need a curing process at around 573-423K. Thus an alternative method that may be performed at low temperature is strongly required.
