Long-lost sponges tell an evolutionary tale

Thanks to new fossil finds in Mongolia, a peculiar gap in the history of primitive sponges has now been plugged. The finds have confirmed that sponges were among the earliest animals. They also suggest that the Cambrian explosion- the period around half a billion years ago when the ancestors of many modern animals evolved rapidly- may have lasted longer than the few million years that scientists usually assume.
