The ghost of Tom Rapoport still walks the halls of the Max Delbrueck Centre for Molecular Medicine in what used to be East Berlin. Rapoport, a cell biologist, represented the best and brightest in East German science. His former colleagues talk about the clarity of his thinking, and about how he gathered younger scientists around him and helped promote their work. But mostly, they talk about how political pressure forced him to find work elsewhere.
