In A corner of my office, under a Perspex cover, is a mangled box of delicate and expensive electronics. This box, together with a magnetometer sensor which was torn from its mounting and has never been found, was built to measure magnetic fields in the Earth's magnetospheric shield. It was mounted on one of the four Cluster spacecraft destroyed in the explosion of the first test flight of the Ariane 5 rocket last June.
