A hundred years ago in April, the British physicist Joseph John Thomson discovered the electron. It was an epochal moment in the history of science for the electron was the first "subatomic" particle and its appearance on the scientific scene dealt a death blow to the 2000-year-old idea of the atom as the indestructible building block of all matter.
