Research sacrificed to refurbish South Pole

In the interests of world peace, America's Antarctic scientists are being asked to take a cut in their funding. The US needs to replace its rapidly deteriorating research base at the South Pole, and one idea was to ask other countries to share the cost. But a panel convened by the National Science Foundation (NSF) says that any nation that helped pay for the station might later make a territorial claim on the pole.
