What looks like an ordinary CD but behaves like a giant floppy disc, with nearly 500 times the storage capacity? The answer is the rewritable CD, or CD-RW, which will be launched in Hanover next week. It can record and play back digital data, including backup files from a PC, hi-fi sound or video. The disc can then be erased and reused. Hewlett-Packard, Mitsubishi, Philips, Ricoh, Sony and Yamaha are clubbing together to support the new format.
