摘要

Count dracula's mythical thirst for blood now has an astonishing parallel in the plant world that could mean bumper harvests for farmers. Leif Buelow and his colleagues at the University of Lund in Sweden have shown that tobacco plants thrive and outgrow natural relatives when implanted with a gene that makes a bacterial version of haemoglobin, the red pigment in human blood that transports oxygen around the body. The team is now testing the gene in major crops such as rice and maize to see whether they also flourish.
